Signature Programs

At Medicine Horse, we are devoted to serving individuals and groups through Equine Facilitated Therapy (EFT) and Learning (EFL). We are not a therapeutic riding facility. All of our therapy sessions take place on the ground with our therapists and interns. Our horses are co-facilitators during the session which means their job is to behave in their natural intuitive state and to respond to the client naturally without any agenda.

During our Equine therapy sessions, we focus on sharing space with our horses and building trust with them over time while we learn to ground, groom, and lead with the supervision of licensed mental health professionals. Equine-facilitated therapy sessions use feedback from the horse's behavior and interactions to give insight, thus enhancing the process and providing a therapeutic experience unparalleled by talk therapy alone.

New insights, skills, and successes developed with the horses transfer to each participant's everyday life. Medicine Horse provides a fun, challenging, and unique environment in which human growth, healing, and potential may be achieved.

Why Horses?

There are many areas where horses can help, such as trauma, grief, recovery, depression, and anxiety for all genders and all ages. Working with horses in nature is a unique and effective therapy treatment, especially for those who need an alternative to traditional talk therapy. Equine therapy is "experiential" and in our sessions with horses, we focus on sharing space with them and building trust over time while we learn to ground, groom, and lead with the supervision of licensed mental health professionals. Equine-facilitated therapy sessions use feedback from the horse's behavior and interactions to give insight, thus enhancing the process and providing a therapeutic experience unparalleled by talk therapy alone.

As herd animals, horses are highly social and empathic, relying on their relationships with one another for comfort, safety, and survival. Each horse’s distinct personality may remind you of someone you know, eliciting emotions and behaviors that can be processed in a safe and non-judgmental way. Horses can help build self-efficiency, confidence, trust, communication, and social skills. They also help humans learn impulse control, boundary setting, emotion regulation, and much more.

New insights, skills, and successes developed with the horses transfer to each participant's everyday life. Medicine Horse provides a fun, challenging, and unique environment in which human growth, healing, and potential may be achieved.

Kelley Dean - 2024 Group Participant

"I was thrilled when I came across a horse-based therapy program for breast cancer survivors. The therapists utilize the person-to-horse bonding process to help explore your own personal awareness. It is amazing how this process can give better direction on your own emotional roadmap. I am blown away by how insightful and enlightening the program has been for me. I personally have grown exponentially from my time in the Medicine Horse Therapy. The Therapists, volunteers and staff are warm, supportive, and knowledgeable. The horses are calm, patient and giving. I deeply recommend this program for anyone wanting to explore a better understanding of themselves."
